Refrigerator Buying Guide: Size, Inverter and Low Voltage

How many cubic feet your family needs, inverter or not, LVS for low voltage, and the features worth paying for.

Quick answer

  • Size by family: about 9–10 cu ft for 2–3 people, 12–14 cu ft for 4–5, and 16–20 cu ft for 6 or more.
  • Choose an inverter model if the fridge runs 24/7 on your home supply, which it does, so the savings add up every month.
  • Low voltage in your area? Look for “LVS” (low-voltage start) or an inverter rated for low voltage.

A refrigerator is the one appliance that never switches off, so the choice you make today shows up on every electricity bill for the next ten years. This guide covers size, inverter versus non-inverter, low voltage and the features that are actually worth paying for in a Pakistani home.

What size fridge do you need?

Fridges in Pakistan are sold in cubic feet (cu ft) or litres. 1 cu ft is about 28 litres. The size quoted is the total of the fridge and freezer sections.

Household Recommended size Litres (approx.)
1–2 people, bachelor flat 7–9 cu ft 200–250 L
3–4 people 10–12 cu ft 280–340 L
4–6 people 14–16 cu ft 400–450 L
6+ people, joint family 18–20 cu ft or side-by-side 500–600 L

Measure first. Check the width and height of the space, and leave about 5–10 cm at the back and sides for air to flow. Also check that the door can open fully if the fridge sits next to a wall.

Inverter or non-inverter?

An inverter fridge adjusts its compressor speed instead of switching fully on and off. Because a fridge runs day and night all year, an inverter model typically saves a meaningful amount of electricity over a year. Inverter compressors are also quieter, and many cope better with voltage swings.

A non-inverter fridge costs less to buy. It is a sensible choice for a second fridge that is lightly used, or when the upfront budget is tight.

Low voltage and load-shedding

  • LVS models (for example “Dawlance … LVS”) are designed to start at low voltage, often well below the usual 220 V.
  • Inverter models from Haier, Dawlance and others usually list a wide working voltage range on the spec sheet.
  • After a power cut, avoid opening the door often. A full, closed fridge keeps food cool for several hours.
  • Stabiliser: if your voltage regularly drops below the range on the spec sheet, a stabiliser protects the compressor. Many modern inverter fridges do not need one in normal city conditions.

Types of refrigerator

Type Good for Notes
Top-mount (freezer on top) Most homes Best value, the most common type in Pakistan
Glass-door top-mount Style-conscious kitchens Same cooling, a glass front that is easy to wipe clean and comes in many colours
Side-by-side Large families, big kitchens Very large capacity, often with a water dispenser; needs a wide space and stable voltage
Bedroom / mini fridge Bedrooms, offices, hostels About 2–3 cu ft; for drinks and snacks only

Features worth paying for

  • Digital temperature control: set the exact temperature for the fridge and freezer.
  • Turbo or fast-freeze mode: handy after a big grocery run or before Eid.
  • No-frost: no ice build-up, so no manual defrosting.
  • Vegetable crisper with humidity control: keeps sabzi fresh for longer.
  • Long compressor warranty: compare brands, as warranty periods vary a lot.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before switching on a new fridge?

If the fridge was transported upright, a few hours is usually enough. If it was laid down, wait longer so the compressor oil settles. The manual gives the exact time for your model.

What temperature should I set?

About 3–5 °C for the fridge and −18 °C for the freezer. Colder settings use more electricity without keeping food much fresher.

Is a glass-door fridge less efficient?

No. The glass is a decorative front over a normal insulated door, so cooling is the same as a standard model of the same type.
