Deep Freezer Buying Guide: Size, Single vs Double Door, Inverter

Which size for your family and Eid storage, single or twin door, and why an inverter freezer copes better with load-shedding and low voltage.

By the E Power Market team, Lahore October 24, 2026 4 min read

Quick answer

  • Family use, Eid meat and weekly shopping: a single-door chest freezer of 9–14 cu ft (245–385 litres).
  • Large families, shops or two kinds of storage: a twin or double-door freezer of 14–20 cu ft.
  • Load-shedding or low voltage in your area: choose an inverter model.

A deep freezer is one of the hardest-working appliances in a Pakistani home. It holds Eid ul Adha meat for months, keeps bulk shopping fresh and copes with power cuts that would spoil food in a normal fridge. This guide helps you pick the right type and size the first time.

Single door, twin door or upright?

Type Best for Good to know
Single-door chest Most homes One large compartment. The best value per litre, and it holds its cold well during power cuts.
Twin / double-door chest Big families, Eid storage, shops Two lids, so you open only half at a time and lose less cold. Some models let one side work as a chiller (fridge) instead of a freezer.
Upright freezer Small kitchens, organised storage Takes less floor space and has shelves or drawers, so items are easy to find. Loses a bit more cold each time you open the door.

What size do you need?

Freezers are sold in cubic feet (cu ft) or litres. 1 cu ft is about 28 litres, so 285 litres is about 10 cu ft.

Household Everyday use If you store Eid meat or buy in bulk
2–3 people 7–9 cu ft (200–250 L) 10–12 cu ft (285–345 L)
4–6 people 10–12 cu ft (285–345 L) 14–15 cu ft (385–405 L)
7+ people or joint family 14–15 cu ft (385–405 L) 18–20 cu ft (465–545 L), or a twin door

Eid ul Adha rule of thumb: the meat from one goat or a share of a cow (roughly 15–25 kg) takes about 1.5–2 cu ft when packed flat in bags. Add that to the space your everyday frozen food already needs, and size up if you also store meat for relatives.

Inverter or non-inverter?

An inverter freezer varies its compressor speed instead of switching fully on and off. That brings three benefits that matter in Pakistan:

  • Lower electricity use, because a freezer runs 24 hours a day, every day, so small savings add up over a year.
  • Better with low voltage, since many inverter models keep running at voltages that would stop an older compressor.
  • Gentler restarts after load-shedding, putting less strain on the compressor and your UPS or solar system.

A non-inverter freezer costs less to buy and is perfectly fine if your power supply is stable and you want the lowest upfront price.

Load-shedding: what “backup hours” means

Some freezers advertise “30-hour backup” or similar. This is how long the freezer keeps food frozen with the power off and the lid closed. Thick insulation and a full freezer both help: a full freezer stays cold much longer than a half-empty one. During power cuts, open the lid as little as possible.

Features worth paying for

  • Convertible mode (freezer or chiller): useful for keeping drinks cool in summer.
  • Glass top or sliding glass lids: see inside without opening, mostly for shops.
  • Lock and key: for shops, or homes with small children.
  • Wheels: makes cleaning behind the freezer much easier.
  • Drain plug: for easy defrosting and cleaning.

Looking after your freezer

  • Leave at least 10 cm of space around the freezer for air to flow, and keep it out of direct sun.
  • Defrost when the ice layer is about 5 mm thick. Thick ice makes the freezer work harder.
  • Let cooked food cool before putting it in.
  • After delivery, wait a few hours before switching on so the compressor oil settles (check the manual for the exact time).

Frequently asked questions

Can a deep freezer run on UPS?

Yes, an inverter freezer is the easiest appliance to run on a UPS or solar system because its starting current is low. Check the wattage on the spec sheet against your UPS capacity.

How cold should a deep freezer be?

Around −18 °C is the standard for long-term food storage. Most freezers reach this on the middle setting.

Is a twin-door freezer worth it?

If you open the freezer many times a day, or want one side as a chiller, yes. For occasional use, a single door gives more space for the money.
